Coles Solicitors, the personal injury and accident specialist law firm based in Northallerton has welcomed the recommendation by Lord Justice Jackson to ban Solicitors from paying referral fees for personal injury work. Over the past ten years, Solicitors have increasingly paid higher and higher sums of money to have injured clients brought to them, through TV advertising, campaigns in hospitals and doorstep canvassers, which have tarnished the Solicitors profession immensely. Peter Gibson, the firm’s managing director and Principal Solicitor “I welcome Lord Justice Jacksons views with respect to referral fees, as they create a two tier profession, and the activities of many involved has done nothing to help our reputations” he went on to say “An end to referral fees will see clients consulting their Solicitor about their injury rather can some claim management company or insurance company, because only a Solicitor, specialising in injury work can properly advise an injured person on their rights”. Lord Justice Jackson has been working on a report over the past twelve months upon the way legal costs work in the civil system, his report was published on Friday 15th January 2010. http://www.judiciary.gov.uk/publications_media/media_releases/2010/0210.htm
